New Year... Special Offer!

Here at IDS, we're very pleased with our first official review. For those that missed it, The Mac Observer gave MailForge a 4/5 star review.

Not ones to sit back and pat ourselves on the back too much, we've been hard at work addressing the areas where the review highlighted room for improvement. One of the things that John Martellaro (the reviewing editor) mentioned was the price...$39.95 being a little on the high side for an email client.

So...we've decided to address this..."bug". Starting with the new year, for a limited time, we're offering MailForge for $19.95. All copies registered during this promotion will still be eligible for the same free support and the same upgrades. Just eligible at a better price!

Doesn’t mean we’re resting on our laurels though. While its certainly nice to get such a positive review, we still have a lot of work to do... so its business as usual for us.

Registration
- 30-day trial has been extended
Since the early beta days, we have reset the 30-day trial for virtually every build of MailForge. Even with MailForge 1.0, we continued to reset with every build, in recognition of MailForge being a work-in-progress. With version 1.2 however, MailForge is now much more rounded out, in terms of stability and reliability. So while we, like most software developers, will continue to reset trial periods for significant new versions (such as 1.5, etc), we will not continue to do so for every single build.

What's Next
The need to address the SMTP compatibility and general stability sidetracked us from a number of features we were in the process of adding, such as Manual Filtering. We're now finishing the implementation of that feature, as well as several others.

Early Activation Pricing...

Now that MailForge 1.0 has been released, Pre-Registration has morphed into Early Activation. Through June 15, individuals can purchase MailForge for the same $19.95 that was available during Pre-Registration.

Starting June 16 however, Early Activation will end and MailForge will be available at the full price of $39.95

MailForge 1.0 Released

After approximately 21 months, we’re thrilled to announce the release of MailForge 1.0! We know that sometimes it seemed like this day would never come. But we’ve kept plugging along, adding features, fixing bugs, polishing and improving... all to the point that we felt comfortable releasing 1.0.

Does that mean that MailForge is completely done? Hardly! When trying to replace a program like Eudora®, a program that has been around for 6 - 7 versions and 20 years, its just not possible to completely replace it in this amount of time. We certainly realize that some will be disappointed that a particular feature or two didn’t make it in 1.0. However....

We’re still very hard at work adding those features that didn’t make it into 1.0. We have no intention of slowing down... we’re just getting going. If 1.0 doesn’t have a feature that you were looking forward to, hang tight... we’ll get it in as soon as humanly possible.

If you would like to see what features are in the pipeline, take a look at our
Roadmap Page...

MailForge 1.0 Update

Due to some last minute performance issues with the Windows build of MailForge, we’ve delayed the release of 1.0 until Tuesday, June 9th.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

1.0 Nears... Pre-Registration Winds Down...

It’s been a bit quiet... but that’s because we’ve been hard at work tweaking and polishing MailForge. As a result, 1.0 is nearly done. We’re seeding final test builds to select individuals who are helping us finalize the last couple of remaining issues.

With 1.0 nearly done, we also want to announce the definitive date that preregistration will end... May 31st. 1.0 will be available on Monday, June 2nd, so preregistration will morph into “Early Activation.” Early Activation will continue through June 8th, with full price going into effect on June 9th.

Odysseus to MailForge

It’s official... Odysseus is now known as MailForge. Why? After all, Odysseus has been the name of the project since late 2007. Why would we change it now? There’s actually a number of reasons...

1) Odysseus was never intended to be anything more than a “codename” for the project until a more suitable name could be found.

2) Odysseus is an already widely used/well known name, including from some software projects. Obviously, the most well known use of the name is the mythology itself. This means that this project will always be fighting for attention in search rankings, etc. In contrast, MailForge is not used by anything (until now that is).

3) Unlike MailForge, Odysseus is an easily misspelled name.

4) A forge is a place where something is created, even crafted... fitting for a program that will be used to craft email.

Hopefully this isn’t too jarring of a change. In the long run though, it should prove beneficial.

Temporary Forum Changes

Over the last month, since 1.0 Beta 9, we’ve been hard at work fixing bugs, adding polish, and implementing a couple of surprise features... all in preparation for the final release of 1.0. Given that we want these surprise features to remain a surprise, and therefore don’t want download sites to pick up these final beta builds, we’ve locked the Odysseus General Forum to registered users only. Once 1.0 is released we’ll reopen it to Guest access again.

What’s left? For the remainder of this week, we will be focusing on Filters, IMAP, and Windows Interface, leading up to 1.0 next week. If you don’t see a favorite feature in Odysseus as it stands right now... don’t be discouraged. We will be continuing to implement the remaining features in subsequent releases. Our goal right now is simply to get 1.0 out the door with the most commonly used features, with the remaining to follow shortly thereafter.

We want to especially emphasize the amount of work that will be going into the Windows version over the next few days. While both version share feature parity already, the Windows version needs considerable work in the Interface Department. We’ve already started, and will continue, so that by next week both versions will have not only feature parity, but interface parity as well.

What’s left to do? There are a couple of features left to implement... although in comparison to what’s been do so far, they’re relatively minor features. These include Printing, Eudora Nickname importing, and Address Book improvements. Aside from that however, the majority of the remaining time will be spent fixing bugs, improving performance, and generally enhancing the application as much as possible.

What, though, if a feature you’re accustomed to from Eudora® doesn’t appear to be making it into Odysseus 1.0? Not to worry. As we stated last year when we first announced our plan to develop Odysseus, our primary goal for 1.0 was simply to duplicate the most common functionality in Eudora®, with the more advanced features and abilities coming in subsequent releases. So if a particular feature isn’t in 1.0... look for it in 1.0.1. If it’s not in 1.0.1... look for it in 1.0.2. If it’s not in... well you get the idea. With Odysseus under active development, if something you like is missing, it’s only a matter of time before we get it added in. And more often than not, it’ll be added in sooner rather than later.

Pre-Registration Extended Again

We want to let everyone know that we are extending the Pre-Registration offer again. We’ve been hard at work over the last week and half adding in the remaining features that the first two betas were lacking.

As a result, and since we decided to take the extra time to implement these features rather than release another build last week, we’re extending the pre-registration.

Pre-Registration Extended

We want to let everyone know that we are extending the Pre-Registration offer to August 18th. While tremendous progress has been made in the last couple of weeks, in terms of adding both features and polish, there’s still too many things left to do to warrant ending the pre-registration on the 11th.

The good news is, this week will see some significant updates to Odysseus that should make some serious headway toward closing the gap to 1.0 Final...

Odysseus 1.0 Beta 2

  • Improved Transfer Menu (New mailboxes show up immediately)

  • Approximately 1 dozen minor bug fixes

What’s left to do? There are a number of features left to implement... although in comparison to what’s been do so far, they’re relatively minor features. These include Timed Sending and Receiving, Printing, Delete Messages From Server options, etc. In addition to those features, some existing features, such as Preferences and Importing, need to be improved and expanded. Aside from that however, the majority of the remaining time will be spent fixing bugs, improving performance, and generally enhancing the application as much as possible.

What about IMAP? At present, there are two things to remember about IMAP in this build...

  1. When setting up an IMAP account, Odysseus will (like most IMAP clients) create a local copy of whatever mailboxes are residing on the server. Once the email has been retrieved, there is no way to manually move a message out of those mailboxes, whether it be into another IMAP mailbox, or a local non-IMAP mailbox. This ability will be enabled in Beta 2.
  2. Although there is no way to manually move a message out of an IMAP mailbox, if you have a filter setup to do it, Odysseus will successfully move the message in question to the assigned mailbox. Per the IMAP specification, Odysseus will then REMOVE the message from the ONLINE IMAP MAILBOX. This is in stark contrast to how Odysseus currently handles POP3 email, as Odysseus NEVER deletes email that it has retrieved from a POP3 account... and will not even feature that option until 1.0 final. Unfortunately, due to the inherent differences between POP3 and IMAP, it was necessary to build this functionality in from this stage.

Pre-Registration Expiration

We want to let everyone know that the window to Pre-Register Odysseus for $19.95 officially expires 12:00 AM August 11, 2008. Starting 12:01 AM August 11th, Odysseus will be the standard $39.95. Given that we’ve said from Day One that pre-registration would be available until 1.0... well... we’ll let you come to your own conclusions about that...

In all seriousness though, we would like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who pre-registered Odysseus. By helping to support the project early on, you helped to reinforce what we were counting on... that the market for a Eudora® style email client is alive and well!

Let the countdown begin to 1.0 Final!
